The Mont Belvieu Fire Department was founded in September of 1938 as the Barbers Hill Volunteer Fire Department.  It is one of over 1500 volunteer fire departments in the state of Texas alone. In January, 2003 the name was officially changed to Mont Belvieu Fire Department to more accurately reflect the area serviced by the department. In 2005 MBFD officially became a department of the City of Mont Belvieu. The majority of funding for MBFD comes from taxes and private donations of the residents of the great city of Mont Belvieu.

While the word "volunteer" may have been dropped from the name; the department is still staffed 100% by volunteers. MBFD currently has over 20 members with a wide range of experience and expertise. Many members are industrial firefighters in various area refineries while others are commissioned firefighters in surrounding communities. Several members are also trained in HAZMAT, extrication, high-angle rescue, and other skills with dozens of certifications and thousands of hours of education available to the service of Mont Belvieu. Some members are also Paramedics, EMT and ECA trained. True to the motto: You make the call - we do it ALL!

MBFD operates out of one station, located behind City Hall at Eagle Drive and FM 565. The department currently has 3 engines - one with rescue capabilities, 1 booster, and 1 chief vehicle. They are maintained and kept in the best possible state of readiness by the most dedicated volunteers of MBFD.

Over the course of a year, MBFD volunteers may respond to over 200 calls throughout Mont Belvieu and surrounding areas. Due to Mont Belvieu's location, bordered by I-10 and Hwy 146 with FM 565 and 3180 cutting through the heart of the city, a large percentage of responses are to MVA's or Motor Vehicle Accidents on these well traveled road ways. Many of the few fire calls are brush fire's and mobile home fires, but with the number of homes and subdivisions within the city increasing almost daily, so are the number of calls.

Though staffed by volunteers, the MBFD is a highly dedicated group of firefighters who, with the support of their families, are willing to spend personal time to guarantee the safety of the Mont Belvieu community.
